3. Common questions
Do I need an LTC to carry in Texas?
Texas has permitless-carry provisions for qualifying people, but an LTC can provide additional benefits and is subject to its own requirements and restrictions. Review current DPS guidance.
Do I need to own a handgun first?
Not necessarily. Ask your instructor about rental options and ammunition requirements before your range session.
Can I take the classroom course online?
Yes, through an approved online course provider. Most applicants must still complete in-person range instruction and proficiency with a qualified LTC instructor.
What if I have a prior charge or special circumstance?
Do not rely on this checklist for an eligibility decision. Review Texas DPS eligibility FAQs and consult a qualified attorney if needed before paying for training.
How long does approval take?
DPS lists standard original-application processing at approximately 60 days, but incomplete applications or additional review can extend that time.
